"The Great Gold Raid" was developed in the AMOS programming
language. Graphics were created in Deluxe Paint IV. Music was
created in OctaMED Pro 3. The game was developed on an
Amiga 4000/030. It has been tested on an Amiga 1200 and a 1MB
Amiga 500 (with both Kickstart 2.04 and 1.3). Unfortunately,
as the screen update was suffering on the Amiga 500,
despite efforts to optimize the speed of the main game
loop, it was decided to update the screen at 25 frames/second
instead of 50 frames/second. While this does make the movement less
fluid, it hasn't affected the game play at all. I hope this is just
the limitation of AMOS but it is more likely a lack of programming
experience. If you have a more capable Amiga and would like the 50
frames/second version of the game, please indicate this when
registering.
The game disk is self booting and this is required as it uses
fonts contained on the game disk. It is possible to install the
game on a hard disk, however note that the game does not search
for fonts by name. AMOS loads fonts in from the fonts: directory
and assigns a number to them. Therefore, the fonts contained on
the game disk must appear as the first and second fonts in the
fonts: directory.
The game will save the current HiScore information to a file on the
game disk (make sure the disk is write enabled) if the "S" key is
pressed whilst the HiScore table is on the screen. The game will
automatically load the HiScore information if it finds this file
when it is run on subsequent occasions.
The game requires a joystick plugged into port 2. Further
instructions are contained in the game. For those who find the
game too difficult (hard to believe), there is a cheat built in.
HINT: See the screen where the main character is behind bars.
I hope you enjoy this game as much as we enjoyed developing it.
This is the first game that we have developed, so I hope it will
not be judged too harshly. We have plans to develop other games
which, as we gain experience, will hopefully improve in quality.
If you would like to contact us, please send a letter to the above
address.
Thanks to CU Amiga magazine and especially Dave Smithson, for the AMOS
coverdisk and programming tutorials. Thanks to Europress for developing
AMOS and hope they continue to develop it. Thanks to Commodore for the
AMIGA, the only computer that inspires games creativity.
We acknowledge that Amiga is a trade mark of Commodore International,
Deluxe Paint IV is (C)Electronic Arts, OctaMED Pro 3 is (C)Teijo
Kinnunen & Amiganuts United, AMOS is (C)Europress Software and
CU Amiga is an EMAP Publication.
